Transference Focused Psychotherapy

Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is based upon a psychodynamic understanding of personality dysfunctions such as Borderline Personality Disorder. Long-term treatment is required to affect meaningful change at both the behavioural and personality (identity) levels. The treatment addresses defence mechanisms that interfere with the individual’s ability to function in the real world. The treatment creates the conditions in the therapeutic relationship in which these defensive mechanisms are activated in an attempt to help the individual observe them, understand the functions they have served for them. The overriding goal of TFP is to change the individual’s internalized representations of self and other relationships that lead to the integration of more mature and flexible conceptions.
