The talking treatment offered is customized to the individual’s uniqueness and the personal challenges they are experiencing within their current psychosocial context. Interventions conducted through the therapeutic relationship focus on symptom-reduction, skill-building, tool-acquisition and mastery, and personal self-definition.
The individual’s reactions in therapy, intended to elicit familiar responses from the therapist, are understood as a major source of understanding the nature of the individual’s problems, the ways they cope with their interpersonal environment, and the ways they have learned to behave in earlier relationships with significant persons. As for coping methods of the individual (which may have been effective in the past), these behaviors have become interpersonally problematic and potentially self-defeating, and possibly even destructive. The goal of individual therapy is to help the individual acquire healthier, more adaptive, integrated and realistic response patterns.
